Night Vision Systems
What is Night Vision Systems?
To illustrate, night vision systems (NVS) provide feedback of the road and environment. Due to limited lighting, NVS use specific instruments that help improve visuals. For further explanation, NVS are divided into two separate categories, passive and active systems. Passive systems are most common and use thermogenic cameras to detect heat signatures such as humans and animals. Also, it has a long visual range of up to 1000 feet. The drawbacks, however, are lower image resolution and less effectiveness during warmer months due to lack of temperature difference. In contrast, active systems are less common but are better in quality and operation. More specifically, they use infrared cameras and emitters that provide life-like images in high resolution. A couple drawbacks are it’s shorter range of 650 feet and it is less effective during heavy rain or snow because visibility is hindered.

While high beams cause glare and reduced visibility for other vehicles, infrared lighting falls outside the visible spectrum and does not interfere with other drivers. Therefore, more distant objects are illuminated with infrared lighting, different from traditional headlamps. Also, despite inanimate objects that are not warmer than the road, you are still given a clear image of the road and obstacles that come with it as well as more time to make steering corrections. Regardless, having night vision systems in any vehicle allows for safe operation during night hours. Despite low natural lighting, you’re protected through NVS, whether it’s passive or active.
