What is Cross Traffic Alert?

To clarify, cross traffic alert (CTA) is a safety system that aids drivers while moving in reverse. Particularly, it is activated whenever the vehicle is in reverse and backing out of a parking position. When you’re pulling out and you don’t check behind you, a collision might occur with another vehicle, a cyclist, or a pedestrian. That is where the CTA system notifies you of such obstacles before a collision occurs. In addition, recent safety data shows that cross traffic alerts are just as effective while moving forward as well. Consequently, your vehicle will detect obstructions where visibility is limited such as when your inside a garage. If your car is equipped with back-up cameras, you’ll have visibility and can wait until the obstacle passes before you proceed.

Cross Traffic Alert Calibration

To demonstrate further, the CTA uses small radar devices located in each corner of the vehicle. Whenever the car is in motion and there’s an obstacle, you will be given alerts through a series of escalations, similar to blind spot detection. Firstly, you may hear an audible warning. Secondly, you’ll see a warning light on your dashboard. Thirdly, you may feel a vibration in the steering wheel or even your seat. What’s more is your vehicle will assume control by applying the emergency brakes to avoid a collision.
