Blind Spot Detection

What is Blind Spot Detection?

Though vehicles are different from each other, they all have blind spots. To explain, the areas that are outside your peripheral vision as well as mirrors are known as blind spots. They are, particularly, located along the sides of your vehicle. Most people don’t know they exist, however, this mistake can lead to accidents and injury. Consequently, Blind Spot Detection (BSD) prevents such events from occurring. It’s a system that detects obstructions when you activate your turn signal, either with intention to merge, shift lanes, or parallel park. Whether it be another vehicle, a hidden structure, or a pedestrian, BSD alerts you of the obstacle. As a result, you then hold your position until you can safely make your intended move.

“Blind Spot Detection Calibration”

While it is a system used within ADAS, Blind Spot Detection is critical in of itself. Since the concept was first introduced by Volvo in 2007, technology has and still is progressing, which will allow BSD to eventually become standard in some newer makes and models. To illustrate, BSD issues alerts for the driver in a series of escalations. First, you’ll see a flashing light mounted on your door mirrors. Second, you’ll hear an audible warning. Third, you’ll feel a vibration in your steering wheel. In some cases, it may even prevent you from changing lanes until the obstacle has passed. Currently, drivers are taught to turn and visibly check blind spots to avoid accidents. However, not all drivers are aware blind spots exist. Therefore, it’s important to keep you BSD calibrated, thus keeping you alert and focused while driving.
